Subject: Sparse Days at Cerfacs, ONLINE, Nov 2020

As with nearly all meetings just now, Sparse Days at Cerfacs was held
online. Another major change was in the timetable for the meeting,
starting at 2pm CET until around 7pm. The reason for this is clear
when one sees the geographical distribution of the participants and
speakers. The programme very much reflected the title of the meeting,
with talks over a wide range from iterative methods and
preconditioning, to graphs and direct methods, covering inter alia
data assimilation and optimization. The talks were of really high
quality, even more impressive since, in common with our previous
meetings, we had encouraged the participation of early career
researchers. In fact we were very grateful to the many senior people
who either withdrew their talks or presented a 5 minute flash talk to
enable us to accommodate all early career speakers in a packed
programme of 21 regular talks and 8 flash talks over the two days. We
are also indebted to skilled and experienced people who chaired the
sessions so that the programme stayed on time throughout. One novel
feature the meeting was the novel use of gather town, a web- based
virtual coffee room, where people (or at least their named avatars)
were able to circulate in a large room, with white boards and links to
youtube. One could only communicate with people whom one was close to,
both in voice and video, so that many separate conversations could
take place just as in a normal large coffee room. There were also
tables where the range was limited to people seated at the table. All
this strongly supported a regular feature of our previous meetings
giving a more relaxed atmosphere and plenty of time to interact with
fellow attendees.

Online Event: Mathematics of Big Data: Lessons from COVID-19

Generating a causal understanding of interventions for COVID-19
requires a confluence of several topics: statistical modelling and
causal inference, estimation of mathematical models, and working with
Big Data. This raises several difficult challenges that current
mathematical approaches have gained some limited traction on. This
event explores the mathematical challenges and opportunities that the
COVID-19 epidemic has highlighted, that will go on to be important
into the future. The special format will include a discussion panel
where our speakers and audience can speculate on the importance of
different mathematical research directions for the handling of the
COVID-19 crisis and problems that have a similar character of blending
modelling with large scale statistical inference.

This event is free to attend; however, please note that from January
2021 IMA events will be run on a fee basis in line with our usual
conference programme.

Forecasting in Urban Environments - Tools for Improving Public

state-of-the-art research in spatiotemporal crime data analysis, crime
pattern identification, and crime prediction. The project is in
collaboration with the Nucleo de Estudos da Violencia - University of

in the last 7 years. Portuguese speaking is not required but fluency
in English is mandatory. Sao Paulo Research Foundation provides the
