areas of mathematics (and their applications) from people that work on
them, whilst also providing you the chance to become more involved
with a professional body of mathematics. There will be plenty of time
to network during the conference at our Virtual Coffee Breaks,
allowing you the opportunity to meet people with similar interests and
find out more about the wide range of careers that are available.

Subject: Numerics of PDEs Unplugged 2020, ONLINE, Oct 2020

In summer 2017 a workshop called PDEs_unplugged@Karlsruhe took place
at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany). Unplugged means that
only blackboard talks were given, and that mobile phones and laptops
were switched off during all talks. This very special format was
highly appreciated by all participants. The intention of Numerics of
PDEs unplugged 2020 is to transfer this concept to numerical
analysis. This is quite paradoxical considering that this field of
mathematics is actually motivated by the use of computers. Is it
possible to give talk on numerical methods for PDEs on a blackboard,
and without running movies or showing convergence plots? We believe:
it is! And we believe that the result will often be much better than
so many conference talks with a speaker clicking through 60 slides in
25 minutes.

Sadly, the Covid-19 pandemia put a spoke in our wheel. The Corona
restrictions forced us - irony of fate - to turn Numerics of PDEs
unplugged 2020 into a pure online event. All talks will be given as a
video conference via zoom, but our speakers [Lehel Banjai, Edinburgh
(Scotland); David Cohen, Gothenburg (Sweden); Balazs Kovacs, Tubingen

Mathematics (ICERM) at Brown University invites applications for the
position of Deputy Director, for a term of two to four years beginning

established in 2010 through a National Science Foundation grant.
ICERM scientific programs are overseen by a Director and two Deputy

In response to the COVID-19 crisis, the Simons Foundation has created
the Simons Bridge for Postdoctoral Fellowships, to provide additional
funding to institutes to support one-year postdoctoral positions in
mathematics starting in the fall of 2021 and 2022. The Institute for
Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) has
been allocated three fellowship positions to start in the fall of 2021
and three to start in the fall of 2022. Three Simons Bridge
Fellowships will begin September 1, 2021; these may be extendable for
a second year. The Simons Bridge Postdoctoral Fellowships are
twelve-month appointments. They may not be held in conjunction with an
NSF Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowship or similar
awards. Fellows should not hold positions at other institutions during
their tenure.

Applicants must identify an individual from ICERM/Brown University or
another institution in Rhode Island or the Boston metro area that
could serve as a research mentor. Possible mentors could come from the

Computational Physiology group of the University of Twente, The
Netherlands. The project involves study of microspheres transport in
the liver vasculature as a means to cure liver tumours. A
computational model within the Lattice Boltzmann framework will be
developed in the PhD project to enable simulation of particle
transport in complex anatomical geometries. Simulations will
eventually be carried out on high performance computing resources.

The candidate will collaborate with two other PhD candidates within
the consortium who will respectively perform experimental and clinical
studies. The Radboud University Medical Center will be one of the
main partners for the design and analysis of studies.

The applicants must hold a master's degree in Physics or Engineering
preferably with a focus on Computational Sciences. Programming
expertise, thorough understanding of fluid mechanics and exposure to
HPC resources are highly desirable. The candidate must be excited to

complex nonlinear problems and is of fundamental importance in many
areas of our everyday life. Models and computer simulations allow to
forecast complex processes, also in areas where experiments are
unfeasible or very difficult. The elite post-graduate honors program
Modelling & Simulation of the Department of Civil, Environmental and
Mechanical Engineering (DICAM) at the University of Trento offers
graduated MSc students, and those students who will graduate until
March 2021, coming from the areas of engineering, mathematics and
physics the possibility to gain additional and specific knowledge in
the fields of applied mathematics, computational mechanics and
scientific computing. The honors program Modelling & Simulation is an
ideal preparation for a subsequent PhD program in this area. All
courses can be officially recognized as credits for the DICAM PhD
program. It furthermore prepares students for complex simulations in
research & development departments of big international companies,
international engineering consultancy institutions and service
providers. To further increase the transfer of knowledge between

Digital twinning is the coupling between a dynamic system (physical
asset) and its computerised model (digital asset). The scope of this
is to allow for prediction and optimisation of operations via the
digital asset over the lifetime of the physical one. This, in turn,
requires that the computerised model is promptly calibrated so that
its response matches as close as possible the behaviour of the
physical asset via a continuous cycle of sensor data assimilation and
model prediction, tracking the temporal evolution of the physical
system. This framework is rooted in inverse problems and mathematical
modelling under uncertainty, and finds applications in automation of
manufacturing processes, structural health monitoring and biomedical
signal and image processing, among other areas. Of particular
importance to the digital twins context is the computational
efficiency of the algorithms involved and their scalability in
increasing dimensions, as model estimation and prediction tasks must
be available in near real-time to allow for timely decisions and
controls. This Special Issue aims to bring together articles
discussing recent algorithmic advances in mathematical modelling and
inverse problems of high-dimensional and complex systems. Articles on
topics in real-time simulation, model order reduction, online
learning, scalable uncertainty quantification and data-driven models
are particularly welcome.
