1. Introduction
---------------

Be aware of the fact that these icons are not finished right now!
An improved set of icons based on these icons will be part of
KDE 1.1.2. You will be able to choose between the old icon-set
(measuring 32x32 pixels, 40 colors) and the new one in KDE 1.1.2

Please contact torsten@kde.org if you want to join the icon-team
and:

2. Style-Guides
---------------

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WARNING: please read the following specs carefully if you dont
want to create your icons for your own desktop only :-)
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1.) All icons have to measure 48x48 pixel, have 256 color and are
saved as XPMs. The total size of the objects on these icons
should measure 44 pixels in width or/and 44 pixels in height!
So theres a transparent 2-pixel-border around the icon.

2.) We dont want to confuse/irritate the user, so:
    -----------------------------------------------
All icons in 44x44 should be enlarged versions of the
32x32-pixel-icons in KDE 1.1 but using enhanced quality. That
means that all objects that are displayed on the icon have
almost the same perspective and colors as those with 32x32
and 16x16. You may add further details to the picture but
someone who knows the icon for kppp 16x16 or 32x32 well
should also be able to recognize the 44x44 version as being
the same icon but just in much Much MUCH better quality with
    much more details. e.g.

If you want to create a completely different icon for any app,
you have to make new versions in 16x16 and 32x32 pixels first.

3.) You may use all possible colors.
4.) All icons should have a sharp (i.e. black ) border to make
the icons style-compatible to the 16x16-icons.
5.) every new icon should match the drawing style of the icons
    that already exist.
6.) Besides that the icons should have near-photo-quality.
7.) Icons from other projects (Windowmaker, Gnome, Windows...)
    are not allowed.
8.) If you use photos to create the icons remember: dont take
any pictures from the web for that (copyright-issues and
    uniqueness).

look at the attached examples to find out what I mean ...
Some very good examples for this style are:

go.xpm , exec.xpm, ktop.xpm , kfind.xpm ,
multimedia_package.xpm, kdehelp.xpm , cdrom_unmount.xpm ,
utilities_package.xpm, package.xpm , trash.xpm

3. How to save your self-created icons using Gimp
-------------------------------------------------

Before you save your icon as an XPM-file press
the right mouse-button on the icon, click Indexed
and save it then. Otherwise the icon wont show up
under KDE.

If you want your icon to appear in future KDE-versions
send it to

torsten@kde.org

We will tell you if we will include it :-)

4. Where to get the large HiColor-icons
---------------------------------------
If you want to get a recent version of the large
HiColor-icons and this document then download the
most recent files in:

ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/unstable/icons

5. You can test your icons using KDE 1.1(.1) this way
-----------------------------------------------------

1.) K-Button -> Settings -> Applications -> Panel
!!!! Choose Style: Large -> Apply

Recommended solution for KDE 1.1.1:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
2.a) use the patches that youll find packaged with
these icons

Installation instructions (detailed, as artists are not
required to be hackers)

- save attached files (kiconloader.cpp.diff and general.diff),
  for instance to /tmp
- go to 1.1.1-branch current sources (*!won't work against
  plain old 1.1 release!*)
- cd kdelibs/kdecore
- patch < /tmp/kiconloader.cpp.diff
- make
- make install-exec
- cd ../../kdebase/kcontrol/display
- patch < /tmp/general.diff
- make
- make install

After that you have to create a folder called large in every
icon directory that contains the corresponding normal 32x32-icon
for the 48x48-icons that you have. (just like the mini folders
that already exist ...)
Rename your icon (It must have the same name as the normal icon)
and put it into the large-folder.)
(could someone create a shellscript for this (thanks in advance!)?

Now run 'kcmdisplay style', or choose settings/desktop/style
from K button, and have fun trying all combinations :)

Note that panel restarts automatically if settings changed,
but kfm needs a full restart, as explained in the information
message box.
Trick if you don't want to log out and back in :

killall kfm
kfm &

Thanks for maximum feedback on this. Any strange behaviour has
to be reported to faure@kde.org !!!!!

Quick & dirty solution (recommended for KDE 1.1):
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
2.b) find the old icon in your directory tree -- you will find
most of them in

$KDEDIR$/share/icons

replace the old icon by your new one (make a backup of the
replaced ones!!!) and click K-Button -> Panel -> Restart
