3. The Player
|
The Player in NS-CO is more than health and weapons. With the introduction of
Ranks and Abilities you also have to know some new stuff. Everything new about the
NS-CO player can be found in the following sections.
|
3.1 The Player Menu
|
The Player Menu is the main interface concerning your player. You can change your name, looks
equipment and skills here. You should learn to navigate it as it will be one of the most frequently
used menus in the game. To reach it press ESC and select player from the menu it will then pop up
in the middle of your screen.
Primary Weapon
This section is one of the most frequently used ones. Clicking on the weapon name opens up the
selection of primary weapons. If the name is written in grey, then you have selected a weapon that
you don't have the reqirements for. In this case you are equipped with the default weapon for the
team you're part of until you reach the ability limits for the selected weapon.
You can also select the ammo for your primary weapon as well as your accessoires here.
Sidearm
This section works just like the primary weapon section. The only difference is the maximum of
sidearm ammo and that there are only two possible accessoires.
Melee weapon
This section can not be changed. It's either showing the Multi Purpose Knife (if you're a seal) or
the Khukri (if you're in the tangos team.
Grenades
You can have up to three grenades per type. Available grenades are Frag Grenades, Flash Grenades and
40mm Grenades. Find out more about the grenades in section
4.3 Explosives.
Change Looks
If you click on this element a new menu will open up. In this menu you can select your
and choose your head accessoires and skins. Find out more about the Player Looks in section
3.3 Player Looks.
The Player Image
This image shows which team you belong to. The image shown in the picture to the right is
the seal player.
Change Team
If you click on this item the player menu closes and the team selection appears. You can choose
the team you want to join now. If you're switching your team while playing you loose all your XP
and gain as many as you would if having frehsly joined your new team.
Equipment
In this section you can select your addition equipment. Currently this section is disabled.
Armor
Here you can choose wether to wear a kevlar vest and helmet or not. See section
4.4 Special Equipment for details on armor.
Experience
This section is used to raise your abilities. Your current amount of free Experience Points is
listed here as are all your abilites. Click on the desired ability to raise it. If you have enough
Experience Points, then this ability will be raised by one. See
3.2 Abilities for details on the abilities and their functions.
Total Weight
This area displays the total weight of all the equipment you carry. This influences your walking and
running speed.
|
3.2 Abilities
|
Abilities affect certain aspects of the game. For Example: depending on
your level in certain abilities your choice of equipment is limited. The ability
system in NS-CO is sometimes referred to as TASS. This is the actual name of the system.
The available TASS abilities are:
Technical
Is needed for Explosive devices and defuse kits. Increases your skill with
Grenades and Lowers defuse and bandage times. It's useful for explosives and
other stuff requiring on knowledge and skillful fingers.
Accuracy
Makes your weapons aim more accurate when moving and jumping. It also determines
the time your crosshair stays while moving. The higher your accuracy is the slower
the crosshair fades out. Also needed for Sniper Rifles, scopes and laser pointers.
Strength
Reduces the recoil. Is also needed for some of the heavier weapons.
It increases grenade throw range. It's a requirement for automatic
shotguns, bayonets, heavy sniper rifles and machineguns.
Stealth
Stealth reduces the sounds your player makes. At first minor sounds like
jumping and climbing fade out and then finally you cease to make footstep sounds
while running on certain materials, depending on your value.
It's a requirement for silencers and small mps.
Stamina
Stamina just generally increases your stamina and your toughness. You
don't suffer as bad sideeffects from damage as people with lower
stamina. It's no requirement skill. Also need for sprinting.
Speed
Speed increases your walking speed when not heavily encumbered.
An ability can never be below 1. You always start with at least 10 XPs.
If you're joining a running game you get the average amount of XP the team you are joining has.
To raise a value use the player menu and click on the chosen ability. You will have to spend as
many XPs as the new level is.
You can gain further XP by successfully completing missions and by eliminating enemies. If you
kill two enemies within one round you gain 2 XP, if you succesfully complete a mission you gain
XP depending on the type of mission. If you survive a round you also gain one XP. In addition
to that there are XP awarded for special actions like protecting the brifcase carrier...

3.3 Player Looks
|
Not only are there many new things in NS-CO regarding the player that change gameplay, there
are also a bunch of optical gimmicks you will love to toy with. Because your skin and model is
determined by the map and team you play in we decided to add an extra level of customizability
to NS-CO
To make yourself look unique every player can select a face-skin and one head-accessoire per type.
There are three types of accessoires. Headwear, eyewear and mouthwear. You have to choose your
settings per team as there are different looks available to either team. You can select your looks
either via the setup menu or if you're playing ingame you can do this via the player menu.
Some accessoires are automatically turned of if you activate certain equipment. For example if
you're wearing a helmet then your selected Headwear is replaced by said helmet.
A few of the possible combinations are shown below.

3.4 Teams and Ranks
|
The available team in NS-CO are SEALS and TANGOS. You have to choose one team before
you start to play. You then play for that team until you decide to change teams.
Your Rank in turn is determined by your abilities. Depending on the total amount of
Experience points you have already earned and distributed you can raise in rank.
Rank is nothing but a measurement for your team-colleagues on how good you really are.
Seals and Tangos have different Names for their ranks. See below for details.
